The Nine Steps to Choosing a Quality Logger
If you have decided to harvest your timber, a good logging crew is essential to the timber harvest’s success and to your woodland’s future. Here are NINE things to look for when choosing a logging crew to harvest your timber:
1.
If you sell your timber to anyone, be sure to have a written contract before any trees are cut
2. Some sawmills have full-time loggers; others use subcontractors. Walnut Street Hardwoods uses two logging crews that are both subcontractors. Our subcontractors are D&R Custom Logging and Heiney & Sons. Although Walnut Street Hardwoods does not have its own loggers, we are responsible for ensuring that all of your quality goals are met. 3. The loggers that you choose should be experienced. The folks at Walnut Street have been in the business for a long time, and so have their subcontractors. 4. All logging crews should be covered by workers’ compensation and liability insurance. Walnut Street’s crews have workers’ compensation coverage and Walnut Street has $1 million of liability insurance.
5.
Anyone involved in the business of buying trees in the state of Indiana should have an Indiana Timber Buyer’s License.
Walnut Street Hardwoods’ license number is F327.
6. In this area, loggers fell trees using chainsaws and skid them with skidders. Of course, we use this standard equipment, but if your site has any special requirements, we will try to accommodate them. 7. Skid trails and landings are both elements necessary to a logging operation. We construct skid trails using the skidder, and we try to use open areas with good access to a road for landing sites, so that we damage as little of your property, especially your woodland, as possible. In addition, we try to leave both of these elements in a neat condition with as few ruts as possible. 8. It is important that you let the loggers know where your property boundaries are before they start logging. If properly informed of the property boundaries, we will take special care to not leave tops on your neighbor’s property, cut any of their trees, or damage their property. 9. Get to know whomever you decide to have harvest your timber. That is why we have developed this website. We want you to get to know all of us here on Walnut Street, and to let you know that we are dedicated to offering you a high quality-logging job that will leave your woods in a better condition than it is now.
